There’s the Great American Beer Festival, the World Beer Cup, and now California has its own competition. There’s a hot, new beer competition around: The California Craft Brewers Cup made its debut in August and quickly established itself as the second-largest beer competition in the U.S. Run by the California Craft Brewers Association, a trade group, the competition brought nearly 1,300 beers in 61 categories before a team of 80 judges, myself included. And the results were just announced in Long Beach during the annual California Beer Summit. It's been a busy year in California brewing. The state's craft breweries now number more than 1,000, and industry growth hasn't yet ceased, despite perpetual talk of a "craft beer bubble" burst. At this year's California Craft Beer Summit in Long Beach last weekend, hundreds of representatives from the state's breweries, malthouses and hop growers gathered to share industry insights (and beer, obviously) and to engage in a friendly competition. Today marked the first day of the California Craft Brewers Association’s fifth-annual California Craft Beer Summit. An industry conference for Golden State brewers, it is likened to a localized version of the national Craft Brewers Conference. The latter is an event by the trade organization representing independent U.S. breweries, the Brewers Association, which is also known for putting on the largest annual beer festival and competition in the country, the Great American Beer Festival.
